Fall Fun at the Griswold Center

img_0025It’s a busy time of year at the Griswold Center. The facility, which is part of Worthington Parks and Recreation and caters to individuals 55 years of age, has planned a host of creative, educational and fitness-related programs for the fall season. Although early registration will not officially begin until next week, it’s not too early to be thinking about the classes that interest you.

Here’s a look at some of the offerings that piqued our interest:

Holiday Events

  • The Transylvania Treat: A Murder Mystery Luncheon – This is the perfect event to get you in the mood for Halloween! Gather your friends and dress up in your favorite costume for a clue-filled luncheon at Count Dracula’s Castle (Town Hall).
  • Harvest Dance – Join the Griswold Center for one of the most anticipated events of the year. The dance, which is hosted in conjunction with the Thomas Worthington High School Community Service Club, is free and open to all ages. You’ll learn all the newest dance moves, feast on delicious food and drink, and meet new friends while roasting marshmallows around the fire pit.

  • Technology 101 – Tired of asking your kids and grandkids for help with your iPhone? The iCloud Beginners and iPhone Beginners classes will have you backing up your pictures and asking Siri for directions before you know it. There’s also a Pokemon-Go “How-to” class. In it, you’ll learn how to download and use the popular app and practice catching Pikachu on the Village Green.
  • Language and Current Event Classes – From conversational Spanish, German and French groups to lively Civil War Round Table discussions and a U.S. Presidential Study Group, folks will congregate around a common interest, improve their skills and likely learn a thing or two.

Health and Wellness

  • Soup For You! – Nothing says fall like a hearty cup of soup. Join chefs Mary Kay Scott and Nathan Chun each Friday at noon to enjoy a made-from-scratch soup.
  • Fitness – In addition to their athletic facility and numerous fitness offerings like yoga, Zumba, strength training and sports, the Griswold Center is excited to premier SilverSneakers BOOM, a new series designed for baby boomers and active older adults. The classes, which cater to all levels, are available for PRIME and SilverSneakers members 50 years of age and up.

Good Old-Fashioned Fun griswold

  • Day Trips – With more than 20 excursions to choose from, the Griswold Center day trips are the perfect way to experience new cities, enjoy fantastic shows and museums, and appreciate nature. “Our day trips have become quite popular,” said Ryan Cooper, customer service coordinator. “We take care of all the details, including transportation, great rates and special treatment, like museum docents, allowing folks to just relax and enjoy themselves.”
  • Cards – Fancy yourself a card shark? The fine, card-loving folks at the Griswold Center invite you to drop in for one of their weekly games. With several, ongoing offerings, including Bridge, Pinochle, Mah Jongg and Euchre, you’ll enjoy meeting new friends and taking part in a little friendly competition. No registration required.

Registration for all fall activities begins on September 28 for members and on October 1 for non-members. The Griswold Center is located at 777 High Street. For more information about upcoming offerings and events, visit www.worthington.org.
